Information
For many newcomers, one of the main differences between medical care in the Netherlands and their home country is the central role of the general practitioner (GP).
In the Netherlands, almost everyone has their own GP. This doctor knows you and your family (if applicable) and is familiar with your health history and concerns. The GP serves as your first point of contact for questions regarding both physical and mental health.
GPs can address most of your general health inquiries and perform minor surgical procedures, as well as standard gynecological and pediatric examinations. It is common for children to be seen by their GP, while pediatricians in the Netherlands typically focus on children with special needs or specific medical conditions.
